she sits on her bed with her blanket and she's talking to
this girl on the phone. listening to what the girl has been
doing with her life. this girl used to be her best friend. this
girl is her former best friend. former makes it sound so
official. the end of their friendship isn't official yet. she
remembers talking to this girl on the phone every night. and the girl used to care. she used to care. it was a little too easy to
stop. caring. and she doesn't know if she'll ever be able to trust
another person like she
trusted this one
with trivialities.
it's not so easy to lend your weaknesses to another person.
she must have forgotten to tell the girl about this one.
and they've known each other for 13 years. part of her
still thinks she knows the girl better than the girl knows herself,
or she knows herself. but this girl is becoming less
transparent.
and they no longer turn to each other with the latest break-
through or tragedy.
like this one.

meg

watching the sky i saw one of your stars fall into
my backyard
and it made me smile to think that you singled me out
and i couldn't remember your middle name
but to you it's all the same because you never knew mine
i thought you might be watching too
and smiling and thinking of me
as i wish you say you'll follow me anywhere but where
is that if i'm not leaving?
i can't help but question your judgment
i thought you might like to see the moon
so here it is
giftwrapped
and i'll follow you anywhere
if you promise not to
leave
